Why vitamin K2 as a supplement?
Vitamin K2 plays a crucial role in the absorption and processing of calcium and blood clotting. Vitamin K2 ensures the activation of the so-called GLA proteins (gamma-carboxylglutamic acid), which in turn control calcium and influence some blood clotting factors.
Vitamin K2 uses the process of "carboxylation" to ensure that the calcium you consume through food or supplements arrives where you would like it and strengthens and repairs bone structures there. If you have a vitamin K2 deficiency, your body cannot store some of the calcium.
A deficiency of vitamin K2 is suspected of causing osteoporosis. Since the body cannot produce enough vitamin K2 itself, we rely on intake through food or nutritional supplements.
A sufficient supply of vitamin K2 is important for everyone; an acute deficiency leads to symptoms such as a blood clotting disorder. In the long term, the risk of osteoporosis increases and calcification of the arteries can be promoted.
Where else can I get vitamin K2?
Vitamin K2 can be found in leafy and cabbage vegetables such as kale, parsley, spinach and broccoli, as well as in foods made from animal products. Quark and certain types of cheese that have undergone a bacterial ripening process, for example Brie (soft cheese). Meat, offal and egg yolks are other sources of K2. However, the amount of vitamin K contained is low to very low, especially in the foods that are more common, i.e. those that are used more frequently in the daily diet.
The dosage of vitamin K2
Based on current medical findings, a dosage of 100 to 200 µg per day is recommended, which is above the current recommendation of the European Union. However, this is also due to the fact that this recommendation from the European Union is only based on the maintenance of blood clotting factors and the findings regarding possible advantages in the prevention of bone diseases have not yet been incorporated here.
In a Dutch study over a period of 3 months, no signs of problems with K2 supplementation were found; doses up to 360 µg were tested here.
