Description
Properties:
Vitamin D3 is an essential vitamin with a variety of health benefits. No vitamin is subject to as much scientific research as vitamin D. For two reasons. First, many people are significantly deficient in this vitamin. Second, according to new discoveries, vitamin D appears to be involved in a variety of processes in the body and is much more important than previously thought:
- Osteoporosis, osteomalacia, muscle weakness, risk of falls
- Autoimmune diseases and infections
- Cancer
- Obesity and diabetes
- High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
- Depression, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease
People have three ways to replenish their vitamin D stores. Through food, sunlight exposure and dietary supplements.
Food:
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is therefore only found in high-fat foods. The main sources are cod liver oil and generally fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, herring, sardines, eel, trout, anchovies), but also mushrooms exposed to sunlight. Wild mushrooms contain more vitamin D than mushrooms grown in caves under low light conditions. Egg yolks also contain some vitamin D. Additionally, vitamin D is added to certain products such as margarine and frying oils.
Sunlight Exposure:
The second and most important source is skin exposure to sunlight. Around 80 to 90% of the total requirement is covered by solar radiation. In recent decades, due to changes in living and nutritional conditions, vitamin D production has decreased significantly, leaving 80% of children in industrialized countries deficient. Older people in particular have a chronic deficiency of vitamin D3 as their skin becomes thinner, subcutaneous synthesis of vitamin D3 becomes less efficient, and they spend less time outdoors in direct sunlight. However, adults and especially seniors also have a chronic deficiency of the "sunshine vitamin."
Dietary Supplements:
When neither food nor exposure to sunlight can synthesize enough vitamin D3 in the body, dietary supplements are strongly recommended. However, these supplements must contain the correct form of vitamin D, namely the correct form of vitamin D3. The vitamin D2 form, which also occurs in nature, is less absorbed by the body.
The amount of vitamin D we should consume depends on the concentration of 25 (OH) vitamin D3 in the blood. It is relatively easy to determine this concentration in the laboratory. The ideal concentrations are between 40 and 60 ng/ml blood (or between 100 and 150 nmol/l blood), which is also recommended by Dutch researchers. The minimum concentration for good calcium absorption is 34 ng/ml, while optimal neuromuscular function requires at least 38 ng/ml. A recent analysis shows that a minimum of 52 ng/ml is required to halve the risk of breast cancer.
Today many authors recommend a minimum value of 35 to 40 ng/ml of blood (or 90 to 100 nmol/l). The ideal values are probably around those of people who spent a lot of time outdoors at the end of the summer: 50 ng/ml. In fact, few people reach the minimum level of 35 ng/ml. This can be explained by limited sun exposure and inadequate dietary vitamin D intake.
The groups most at risk are children under 4 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women and seniors over 60 years of age. The problem is particularly acute in winter, when vitamin D is no longer synthesized by the skin. Therefore, it is recommended to get enough UVB light all year round or at least take vitamin D3 supplements in winter.
We are seeing recommendations for vitamin D supplements increasing internationally. Most studies show that, especially for seniors, a daily intake of 2000 IU of vitamin D3 is a good standard for quickly increasing vitamin D3 levels in the blood without causing toxic side effects.
Vitamin K2 has been used in recent times Unjustifiably forgotten 80 years ago. Many studies show that this vitamin plays a critical role in the prevention of certain diseases and conditions.
Vitamin K2 is particularly useful for:
- Growing and maintaining strong bones
- Supporting a healthy cardiovascular system
- Supporting a healthy heart
- Maintaining good memory performance
Vitamin K2 works particularly well in conjunction with vitamin D3 for the growth and maintenance of a strong and healthy skeleton. Vitamin K2 stimulates specific cells in our body, namely osteoblasts, which synthesize osteocalcin (a protein) that ensures proper calcium absorption by the bones. This process occurs in combination with vitamin D3.
It is therefore important to consume the correct form of vitamin K2, namely menaquinone-7 (MK-7).
Clinical studies have shown that 45 mcg of vitamin K2 per day are sufficient, provided it is administered (or consumed) in the form of MK-7. Some authors recommend increasing vitamin intake and recommend doses of up to 200 mcg per day. Some studies suggest that the amount of vitamin K2 depends on the amount of vitamin D3 consumed: for every 1000 IU of vitamin D3, 50 mcg of vitamin K2 should be taken. This means that for a consumption of 2000 IU of vitamin D3/day (= recommended) around 100 mcg of vitamin K2 should be taken.
