Summary
Dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a widespread disease in Germany and affects 15 - 17% of the total population. Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film and the surface of the eye caused by many factors. Tears are essential for the health of our eyes because they moisten the surface of the eye, keep it smooth and supple, flush out foreign bodies and ward off bacterial infections. It also supplies the cornea and conjunctiva with oxygen and nutrients. If the quality or quantity of tears is disturbed, subjectively disturbing symptoms arise.
These include tired, burning, itchy and scratchy eyes, increased tear flow, sensitivity to light, redness of the conjunctiva and a feeling of dryness. Dry eye is usually a chronic disease that should be treated early to avoid subsequent damage. Medical wetting solutions with hyaluronic acid – such as VISMED® – have proven their worth for more than 20 years. The preparation is free of preservatives and therefore very well tolerated. VISMED® can also be used for daily moisturization in chronic complaints with damaged tear glands.
Unscrew the cap of the ampoule, tilt your head back slightly and hold the drip opening over the eye to be treated. Use the index finger of one hand to pull the lower eyelid down. Pressing lightly releases a drop of VISMED® solution. Unless otherwise recommended by a doctor, drip 1-2 drops of VISMED® into the conjunctival sac as needed. Do not bring the dropper tip into contact with your eye or touch it with your fingers. By blinking, the solution is evenly distributed, forming a transparent and durable layer of liquid on the surface of the eye. Do not use damaged ampoules.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance in the body that, as a component of tear fluid, ensures that moisture is stored and nutrients can be transported. With their special physical and chemical properties, biotechnologically produced hyaluronic acid solutions are similar to natural tears. They are therefore often used in ophthalmology to treat dry eyes. The product VISMED® contains 0.18% hyaluronic acid.
Pregnant women and women during menopause are subject to hormonal fluctuations and changes. These can promote dry eyes and cause unpleasant symptoms.
Different risk factors influence the production of tears. These include, for example, diabetes mellitus, dermatological and rheumatic diseases, and head irradiation. Taking certain medications can also have a negative effect on the tear film.
Smoke, ozone, wind, dust and cold influence the quality and quantity of the tear film. Dry heating air and staying in air-conditioned rooms can also promote dry eyes.
