    Nonenal has an unpleasant grassy or greasy smell. It's often hard to detect on yourself, but it will stick to fabric like shirt collars and pillowcases. Normal odor often remains present in indoor environments, such as nursing homes, and is therefore sometimes referred to as "old people's smell."
    When does production of Nonenal begin? Usually around the age of 40, when the skin's antioxidant defense starts to weaken. Although most people think that body odor comes from poor hygiene, this is not always the case as it can also come from age-related changes in the body.
    There are two distinctly different sources of body odor: 1. Sweat glands (apocrine and eccrine) that secrete "sweat", which consists of water and organic substances that provide a fertile environment for bacterial growth. Bacterial breakdown of sweat compounds results in traditional body odor. Since sweat is water-based, this type of body odor is easily removed with soap and water. 2. Sebaceous glands that produce lipids (fatty acids) that "oxidize" with oxygen in the air, and are transformed into an organic compound, Nonenal, which produces its unique body odor. As our skin's antioxidant defenses naturally decline with age, the build-up of Nonenal - and the resulting odor - can increase.
    Unlike sweat, lipid acids are not soluble in water and therefore remain on the skin despite intense scrubbing. This also explains why Nonenal is persistent even in the cleanest environments.
    Does Nonenal affect men and women differently? 1. Many women experience changes in body odor during menopause. This can be a combination of increased sweat-based odor as well as nonenal-based odors, which can lead to confusion and frustration when the odor cannot be easily removed. Hot flashes and night sweats during menopause cause excessive sweating and increased fatty acids, resulting in Nonenal. 2. A recent Swedish study found that middle-aged men often have the worst body odor of all age groups. This could be due to the higher testosterone ratios in men and the associated nonenal production. 3. Stress can worsen the production of Nonenal in both women and men.
