    Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, must be consumed regularly and in sufficient quantities through food. It is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot produce itself and can only store to a limited extent. Insufficient intake can lead to severe deficiencies and disorders. A supplementary supply of vitamin C may also be necessary if there is an increased need, e.g. during physical exertion or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
