    • Summary
    The hormone name melatonin comes from the Greek: melás = dark and tónos = expansion.
    This immediately suggests that the hormone melatonin has something to do with the "expansion of darkness". Melatonin regulates the sleep-wake cycle and the release of other hormones.
    A reduction (but also an increase!) in melatonin concentration can lead to sleep disorders or general disruptions to the sleep-wake rhythm (e.g. daytime sleepiness). Chronic disorders in the production of melatonin can lead to premature weight loss or weakening of connective tissue, tendons and muscles. Other important effects of the melatonin hormone are its antioxidant effect and the regulation of many biological and oxidative processes (oxidative stress, see 8-OHdG).
