Description
Coconut chips, desiccated coconut, and coconut cubes are versatile and can be used in muesli, baked goods, in cooking exotic dishes, combined with other dried fruits, and as a delicious snack. The delicious, refreshing, incomparable flavor of coconut embodies the tropics like no other food.
The tropical coconut palm typically grows to a height of 25 meters and is found in tropical regions of the world, such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Africa, and the coasts of South America. The coconut palm is thought to have originated in Southeast Asia, from where it spread across water because coconuts can swim long distances. In many tropical countries, the coconut palm is called the "tree of heaven" because it has been one of the most important sources of food and raw materials there for thousands of years. The wood can be used to build huts, the leaves as roofs, the fibers for weaving baskets and mats, and of course the coconuts as food. Coconuts, which are actually stone fruits and not nuts, are among the most nutritious foods you can find. Due to their high content of all important nutrients, fats, proteins, and water, you could probably live off coconuts alone for an extended period. Particularly noteworthy are the magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, and zinc they contain, as well as vitamins B and E. The white, 1 to 2 cm thick flesh of the coconut encloses a cavity containing delicious coconut water, and is itself enclosed in a very hard shell and a reddish-brown skin. Around this there is a thick, dry, fibrous layer, which is bordered on the outside by a thin, green-yellow, leathery shell.
The flesh of the coconut can be processed into coconut oil, coconut fat and margarine and eaten fresh or dried. Desiccated coconut is primarily used for cooking and baking or for sweet dishes and desserts, while coconut chips or coconut cubes are perfect for snacking.
