Summary
Tears are much more than water...
In fact, the tear film on the surface of our eyes is a quite complicated structure. It consists of a thin external layer of fat that prevents the tears from evaporating too quickly. Below this lies the actual watery tear layer, which has an important function in supplying the cells on the surface of the eye with oxygen and nutrients. To ensure that the tears are well distributed throughout the eye, the innermost layer of the tear film is formed by a layer of mucus - the so-called mucin layer - which adheres well to the cells of the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye (Figure 1).
If the composition of the tear fluid is disturbed or if the tear glands do not produce enough of this necessary fluid, the tear film will rupture (Figure 2). The result: The cells of the eye in this area are no longer supplied with oxygen and nutrients. Those affected notice that the cells are being damaged in the form of itching or burning in the eyes and even a feeling of a foreign body, often associated with sometimes severe pain. In advanced stages, superficial injuries to the cornea and conjunctiva can occur.
The body's naturally occurring hyaluronic acid is ideal for sustainable and intensive eye lubrication. Due to its chemical structure, hyaluronic acid binds many times its own weight in water and holds it. It adheres excellently to the surface of the eye and forms an even, stable film of moisture.
Preservatives that are intended to prevent eye drops from becoming contaminated during storage and use can damage the cells on the surface of the eye. These substances can destroy the natural tear film and can also cause intolerance reactions**. Modern tear substitutes are therefore completely free of preservatives.
HYLO-COMOD™ is also preservative-free, as the patented COMOD™ multi-dose system already excludes contamination of the solution by microorganisms. In addition to preservatives, the phosphates often contained in eye drops can also have a harmful effect if the cornea is already damaged***. Reacting with calcium released from the cells of a damaged cornea can produce poorly soluble crystals, which can lead to calcium deposits and permanently worsen vision. Therefore, eye drops used to treat dry, damaged eyes should not contain phosphate. HYLO-COMOD™ is completely phosphate-free and therefore eliminates the risk of crystal formation.
