Summary

The powerful antioxidant from the sea.

Astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment that belongs to the oxycarotenoids or xanthophylls. Natural sources of astaxanthin include the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, the yeast species Phaffia rhodozyma, salmon, shrimp, krill and other shellfish.
The astaxanthin used comes from the algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Its main function is that it is a powerful antioxidant. Due to its unique molecular structure, astaxanthin exerts its protective effect both on the surface and inside the cell membrane. The activity of astaxanthin as a free radical scavenger is about ten times higher than that of beta-carotene.
Astaxanthin for tired eyes. Most people these days spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen. Eye strain is often the result. Scientists have therefore intensively investigated the eye-protecting properties of astaxanthin.
Human studies with healthy volunteers have shown that astaxanthin can improve visual function and the eye's ability to adapt. It can also prevent eye strain or counteract corresponding symptoms such as blurred vision and dry eyes.
In addition, daily supplementation with astaxanthin has been found to improve blood flow to the capillaries in the retina, suggesting a protective effect against retinal damage.
In human blood, astaxanthin is transported by the lipoproteins VLDL, LDL and HDL. VLDL, LDL and other blood lipids are susceptible to oxidation and in their oxidized form can damage blood vessels, contributing to the development of atherosclerosis. In a Finnish double-blind study, 8 mg of astaxanthin per day reduced the level of lipid peroxidation in the blood of participants.
According to human studies, nutritional supplementation with astaxanthin can also improve the flow properties of the blood and reduce LDL cholesterol levels.
Scientists suspect that astaxanthin, with its antioxidant capacity, can have a beneficial effect on inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Astaxanthin can also counteract oxidative stress during exercise and promote recovery after physical exertion, a human study suggests.
In a placebo-controlled study of infertile men who received astaxanthin in addition to conventional treatment, reactive oxygen levels decreased, sperm motility improved, and the pregnancy rate among female partners was greater than in the placebo group.
According to further scientific evidence, astaxanthin also protects against DNA damage caused by UV light.

Fillers microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide and lecithin, concentrate from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis (contains natural astaxanthin), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, antioxidant ascorbyl palmitate.
