Summary
Regardless of whether you take vitamin K1 drops or K2, the utilized portion is converted to the same extent into K2 MK-4. Only vitamin K1 Trofen and K2 MK-4 are beneficial for the tissue, with each type of tissue having its own ideal ratio of MK-4 to K1. Since K2 cannot be converted into K1, too high a dose of K2 could distort this ratio, which is not possible with vitamin K1 drops. With today's usual diet, people consume many times the amount of K2, but a greatly reduced amount of vitamin K1, which is contained in algae or vegetables that have been consumed since prehistoric times. Unless the use of certain medications prohibits this, vitamin K1 drops or other preparations can be an effective and economical method of increasing K2 levels without disrupting the ideal ratio in the tissue. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin. Researchers initially recognized its role in blood clotting[1], but later studies discovered many more of its functions. The most important of these is to transport calcium in the body to where it is needed, from vessel walls and soft tissue to the bones and teeth. [23] This is the main reason why vitamin K is immensely important for the prevention of vascular calcification [456] and bone loss [78910]. The most “popular” forms of vitamin K are vitamin K1K2 MK-4K2 MK-7 and vitamin K3, which is used exclusively in livestock breeding. Vitamin K1 is found in plants and, in small quantities, in animal foods. K2 MK-4 is mainly found in high-fat animal foods from large-scale production, while K2 MK-7 is found in fermented foods. [1213] It is interesting that industrial meat products contain significantly more MK-4 than the meat of animals from traditional livestock farming or from game, which is due to feed enriched with vitamin K3. There is almost no K2 MK-4 in non-industrially produced meat products. [14] The official recommendations are limited exclusively to vitamin K1 drops and even of these, a low intake of less than 100 mcg per day is recommended. If taken in an easily absorbable form, this amount is only sufficient for the activation of blood clotting factors. In other countries, however, many doctors and researchers only consider vitamin K2 to be important because it is the only form that has other positive effects apart from blood clotting. In recent years, more and more studies have examined the various forms of vitamin K in connection with bone loss and vascular calcification. K2 MK-4 is actually responsible for the basic positive effects. However, this does not mean that K2 MK-4 should be taken immediately as a dietary supplement because the other K vitamins are also converted into MK-4 in the body.
