The medicine is a vitamin.
It is used in cases of folic acid deficiency that cannot be corrected through diet.
The medicine must not be taken
if you are allergic to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
The increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid can mask a vitamin B
deficiency. Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia due to impaired red blood cell development (megaloblastic anemia), it must be ensured that this is not due to a vitamin B deficiency. The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before therapy begins.
Always take this medicine exactly as described or exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the recommended dose is
Depending on your needs, 1 to 3 tablets per day (corresponding to 5 - 15 mg folic acid).
Dosage during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
1 tablet per day (corresponding to 5 mg folic acid).
Duration of use
The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements and is determined by the doctor for each patient.
During pregnancy, higher doses than 5 mg daily should be avoided.
If you have taken a larger amount than you should
No symptoms of overdose are to be expected with occasional higher doses.
In patients with seizure disorders, however, an increase in the tendency to convulsions can occur.
At high doses (taking over 15 mg per day and for more than 4 weeks), gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disorders, agitation or depression may occur.
In these cases you should contact your doctor.
If you have any further questions about taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
After very high doses of folic acid:
Sleep disorders, agitation or depression, gastrointestinal disorders
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):
Intolerance reactions, e.g. B. in the form of skin redness (erythema), itching (pruritus), shortness of breath (bronchospasm), nausea or circulatory collapse (anaphylactic shock)
If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.
Warnings and precautionary measures
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.
Even in the case of life-threatening anemia due to impaired development of red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), a possible vitamin B deficiency must be ruled out before starting therapy due to the risk of permanent damage to the nervous system (save serum and erythrocyte samples and determine the Vitamin B
content).
There is no sufficient experience with the use of a daily dose of more than 5 mg folic acid during pregnancy, therefore the maximum daily dose of 5 mg folic acid should not be exceeded.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
There are no known risks up to a daily dose of 5 mg.
Controlled Studies on pregnant women with daily doses of up to 5 mg folic acid have shown no evidence of harm to the unborn child.
Folic acid supplementation can reduce the risk of neural tube defects (malformation during the development of the child in the womb).
As the safety of a higher dosage is not guaranteed, a dosage of more than 5 mg folic acid per day must not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
The tablets are taken whole with meals some liquid.
Taken together with other medicines
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using other medicines, have recently taken/used other medicines or plan to take/use other medicines.
Giving folic acid can increase the blood levels of anti-seizure medications (anticonvulsants, e.g. B. Phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone) and thereby possibly increase the susceptibility to seizures.
When high doses are administered, it cannot be ruled out that the drug and folic acid inhibitors administered at the same time (folic acid antagonists), such as e.g. B. certain drugs against bacterial infections or malaria (trimethoprim, proguanil, pyrimethamine) and methotrexate (active ingredient for the treatment of tumors, among other things) inhibit each other's effects.
Simultaneous administration of folic acid and fluorouracil or oral fluoropyrimidines (e.g. capecitabine) (drugs for the treatment of cancer) can increase the effect and This can lead to an increase in the cell-damaging effect of fluorouracil or oral fluoropyrimidines (e.g. capecitabine). This can e.g. B. manifest in severe diarrhea.
Chloramphenicol (active ingredient used to treat infections) can prevent the response to treatment with the drug and should therefore not be administered to patients with severe folic acid deficiency symptoms.
