He was deployed on all fronts and in large numbers and is rightly regarded as the real "beast of burden" of the Wehrmacht. The chassis, the robust suspension with rigid axles and leaf springs and the rear axle with twin wheels could carry a payload of over 3 tons. The easy-to-maintain 3,600 CC Opel engine delivered 75 hp. The most widespread was the 4x2 version with rear-wheel drive. However, there was also a 4x4 version, which was used in the Russian Steppe as well as in the African desert. Thanks to its versatility and large rear cargo compartment, the Opel Blitz was produced in several thousand units and also used for tasks other than pure Transport, for example as a mobile command post with radio systems for transmitting commands and coordinating troops on the battlefield.
